Event Site Opening in jeopardy....usual reasons.

Event Site opening - but maybe not because a bunch of knuckleheads decide to pump and dry and hangout on the grass at the Event Site this weekend.
They were mostly locals who should know better- they've raised decent children and all that. Goes to show that common sense and a dozen signs that say CLOSURE don't register with some people.

Oh - and kiting and jumping inside the buoy is never a good idea as it's a no-fly zone.

Do people really not understand that kiting from the Event SIte is a privilege that needs to be nurtured?

It was sad to see how many people ignored the signs over the holiday. It only takes one to ruin it for everybody else.
I noticed orange cones being installed at the ES today that will reduce parking spots by 50%. The Port was very pleased with separation and lack of groups at the Spit. Not so much at the ES.

It wasn’t just kiters, though the kiters really stood out. Disappointing, but not surprising.

I feel like the port could have been a bit more proactive in discouraging folks. Sure, the signs should have been enough, but not enforcing the closure for everyone made it look open. Signs or no signs.

They can write parking tickets and check meters. They are the owners and need to police their property and enforce the rules. One guy with a ticket book would have cleared the place in no time.

Putting up signs isn’t getting it done.

Our bad actors didn’t seem to feel any heat. Looked quite comfortable hanging out up there.

Just saying.

By 5:00pm the closed signs on the Event Site grass had been replaced by the crowds=closures signs although the parking lot was still closed.

Event Site and Event Site Parking Lot – The Event Site parking lot will open for the summer season at 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 27. The Waterfront Trail through the Event Site is open.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE EVENT SITE OPENING:
No kite launching or landing allowed at the Event Site until further notice. Pumping and drying at the east end of the Event Site lawn is okay. Proper social distancing is required.
Parking booth attendants schedule will be intermittent. If there is no parking booth attendant and you do not already have a season pass, you will need to pay for parking at the 2 kiosks located in the Event Site parking lot.
The lot will close at 9:00 p.m. every night.
To limit the number of users and encourage social distancing, traffic cones will be placed in every other parking spot. These spots are closed.
The restrooms are closed. There will be porta-potties located near the restrooms. Garbage service is limited – there will be a small dumpster placed near the restrooms. Please come prepared to pack out your garbage.

What I wonder is why signs continue to go up when its abundantly clear a big percentage of the population does read them (that goes for everywhere not just the port). It seems a waste of effort and frustrates those who regularly abide by rules/laws. There are solutions. Doing the same thing over and over again yet expecting a different result is called insanity. Expecting those who obey rules to talk to those that don’t seems a recipe for unpleasant confrontations. Remember the dude from SF a few weeks ago at the Marina? He didn’t give a crap what anyone said.
It’s the ports property. If they really want to keep people away I’m sure they could find a consultant to tell them how to get it accomplished.

Easier and cheaper to just shut it down. Don’t like it but you can’t blame them the way things are right now & the way some people are. Clumping & Closures probably coming back. Sadly.

Yes, hopefully people will follow the rules and all of the newly opened launch sites can remain open all summer. At least there are more options now for people to spread out.

Not surprising that people were on the grass pumping and hanging out. Can't expect the people who can't follow the "stay close to home" order to read the signs and follow the ports rules
